Case Study

Avalon Airport

The Project

Linfox required a new international terminal located at Avalon Airport that would be completely separate to the existing domestic terminal. It would operate as Melbourne’s second International Airport.

Linfox appointed Qanstruct to build the facility and ASKIN were contracted to manufacture and install the Exterior Panel component of the project.

Located east of the existing Domestic Terminal, the International facilities would provide over 7000m2 of terminal space and supporting infrastructure.

The Challenges and Solutions

One of the most important considerations for a build of this nature was getting the design correct in the first instance. As part of the design, engineering and construction process, ASKIN worked collaboratively with FM Global and all relevant stakeholders to ensure the strict standards for FM Approvals were met.

ASKIN Performance Panels manufactured and installed over 4,000m2 of XFLAM Exterior panels in Colorbond Paperbark and 1,270m2 of XFLAM feature façade/parapets in Sky Red. Adding to this were custom designed and manufactured security doors and frames.

ASKIN was part of the 126 different subcontractors engaged by Qanstruct with 1100 workers on site throughout the construction period.

With a tight installation program, the complexities of working in a secure airport, and design changes that increased the project size, the project deadline didn’t not alter due to international flights already being booked.

The Results

The result has been state-of-the art terminal with simple comfort for passengers, and plenty of space to expand once new airlines come on board. It includes two duty free stores, TRS facilities, a full bar and café, and is the first airport in Australia to offer intelligent CT cabin baggage screening to international travellers.

The new terminal is capable of exporting 14 tonnes of fresh Victorian Produce daily, will have up to 220,000 passengers annually and has opened up more than 200 jobs in the Geelong region.
